![]() Some people just aren't wired for old school gaming, apparently. Once again I say "screw you Angry Nintendo Nerd" with this one. Many gamers wanted a port of Konami's arcade beat-'em-up of the same name instead, but had to wait until 1991, when a port of the arcade classic came to the NES under the TMNT 2 moniker. Unfortunately, this game didn't satisfy everyone. It also had multiple fields-of-view, from top-down navigation to side-scrolling sequences, the perspectives were mixed up considerably at a time when games were usually from one outlook only. The great thing about TMNT was its ability to let gamers use all four Ninja Turtles at will, even though it was only a one-player action game. Developed by Konami and published by its subsidiary Ultra (a ghost publisher created only so that Konami could publish more games per year than Nintendo allowed), TMNT proved to be a fun, challenging game with crisp graphics and compelling gameplay. Naturally, it was only a matter of time before a videogame followed the television show and toys. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles was a smash phenomenon in the late 1980s. The day this one was conquered was when I finally found Game Genie codes, booted up two players and made sure either my brother or I stayed alive to keep the progress on our assault. Two guys with a knife and a suicide complex decide to invade Russia. This is the original co-op Splinter Cell (minus the stealth part). Your standard melee attack was a stabbing knife, with distance-attacking firearms available later on, but no matter what your armament, you had to be precise with your placement or cheap death was inevitable. Instead, it was a lot easier to take your time and advance through each level slowly, as waves of soldiers spawned from all direction to charge you and kill you dead. Rush 'n Attack is a side-scrolling beat-'em-up/shooter that didn't reward new players for attempting its titular strategy. You've got to remember the historical time period that the NES was released – it was an age when the Cold War was still a very prominent problem in many American's minds, and game companies certainly didn't shy away from the free advertising that the fear-inspiring nightly news and morning papers were instilling in the purchasing public. It doesn't take a master of Mad Gab to discern the phonetically equivalent true title Konami was going for with this one, especially after you realize that the setting is a Soviet stronghold and all of the enemies are Communists. Do you need anything else? It's no Blades of Steel (hell EA's NHL09 isn't Blades of Steel), but growing up in Minnesota and playing on a hockey team ensured that this one was in the NES as much as Super Mario 3. ![]() I think I've got the same fond memory for this one as everyone else does: skinny dude, medium dude, and fat dude. The only game that ended up rivaling this excellent design was Konami's Blades of Steel, but the two were different enough to own and enjoy both (which is why you'll find Blades on this countdown). Every Ice Hockey player discovered their own perfect combination of men, and then it was on to the ice. ![]() You could choose from three different player body types, and outfit your team with any combination of them fast but weak Skinny Guys, brawny but slow Fat Guys, or well-balanced, middle-ground Normal Guys. This game of skating and slap shots was perfectly balanced, simple fun with just the right touch of planning and strategy to keep things interesting match after match. None of those games ended up having the lasting appeal and addictiveness of one of its other contemporaries, though – the first-party Nintendo sports sim known simply as Ice Hockey. Nintendo had a fairly diverse lineup of sports titles introduced for the NES early on in the system's life cycle, including 8-bit interpretations of soccer, tennis, volleyball and even downhill slalom skiing. ![]() I made the mistake of only taking one, thinking we’d use any of the handful of other blankets to swaddle the kiddo at home. And hospitals have the best swaddle blankets. It’s actually kind of amazing how quickly a screaming baby can be lulled to sleep when swaddled. Swaddling is life for the first couple of months. ![]() ![]() In short: They work better than anything else we tried. It’s also worth noting that everything listed here can be cleaned and disinfected. I’ve tried to provide links to the least expensive gear I can find online. And I realize that is more challenging now with Covid maybe making you more wary of buying used from other people. All of our bottles were hand-me-downs from Blythe’s sister so if you can score a few varieties to try out, it’s the way to go.Ī lot of the other gear I recommend below can also be found used in near new condition because it can only be used for so long. We also really liked the Comotomo bottles, but they’re expensive and hard for babies to hold, when they get to that point. Anti-colic claims aside (that’s nonsense doctors don’t know what causes it), these bottles are great. And we’ve heard great success stories from family and friends about getting their kids to give up pacifiers without much trouble.Īs far as bottles, the winner for us was the Tommee Tippee. We didn’t have any with us at the hospital and wished we had. Pacifiers can be polarizing and I know there are varying opinions out there, but they were a lifesaver for us and our ability to get the kiddo to sleep. I like how it contoured to his face it looked more comfortable than others we tried, which included Nuk and Phillips Avent soothies. The kiddo didn’t spit out a pacifier or bottle, but definitely liked some better than others. I also don’t mention bottles or pacifiers because babies have different preferences. Because a lot of this won’t be used very long, what you can get used should be in pretty good shape and will hold up through your baby and probably more if you wanted to pass it along to the next parent. Speaking of, look for a local parents group by Googling the name of your town plus “parent’s group” or look on Facebook. Because they grow out of everything so fast, we’ve tried to outfit the kiddo almost exclusively in hand me downs and other used clothes I’ve found online. Onesies and pajamas are mostly all you’ll need for the first couple of months. If you have a baby shower, you’ll get a ton of newborn and 3-month onesies and bibs. Something I don’t mention at all is clothes. I didn’t include some essentials that you’ll likely get as gifts from excited friends and family. This list includes most of what you’ll need, including what I have strong opinions about and spent the most time researching. If you’re like me and you just want your kid to be safe and comfortable, even the seemingly insignificant can be super important. But some of this will be what you use everyday for your baby’s first year, like their infant car seat or stroller. You may only use some of this stuff for a few weeks or months. Some of these items seem minor like burp cloths and they are. Before our son was born, I spent hours and hours over months researching the stuff we’d buy for him or ask our families to buy as baby shower gifts. ![]() Zoom also offers a Touch-up My Appearance feature that allows users to appear in soft focus.įor webinars and large groups, Zoom’s Video Webinar option is the best choice. ![]() Especially at a time like this when that can be an invasion of privacy,” Gooch says. “It’s handy for when people are in spaces where they don’t want to show their background, such as at home. Zoom’s virtual background feature lets users display any image behind them during the call. It’s better for large groups, so everyone isn’t talking over each other.” There’s a virtual waiting room so you can let everyone in at the same, there’s a mute function and a hand-raising function. “I use Zoom for anything client-based, anything with presentations, or if I need to record the meeting,” says Courtney Gooch, a New York-based designer. Since video conferencing is Zoom’s sole focus, it offers a more robust and feature-rich product than Google Hangouts, Chat, or Meet.Īll Zoom plans offer the following features: Zoom has become one of the most popular video conferencing tools worldwide, and for good reason. The price of that simplicity is that Meet lacks the more comprehensive features of Zoom, making it a less suitable choice for those who need nuanced permissions and greater collaboration tools beyond simple video conferencing and screen sharing. (Note that it does have iOS and Android apps for mobile users.) Whereas Zoom requires users to download an app to their computer, Hangouts runs entirely over the web. When it comes to simplicity, Hangouts shines. There are also no time limits for meetings. It’s well integrated into Google Calendar, allowing you to set up video meetings from the Calendar without the need to use any other apps.Īll levels of Meet offer screen sharing to present documents, encrypted calls between all users, the ability to join calls through a dial-in number, and the ability to join via the web or through an Android or iOS app. Meet’s basic level comes with Google Workspace, so for enterprises that already use Google products, there’s no extra cost. ( Google Hangouts Meet is in the process of being rebranded as Google Meet, so you may see it referred to by either name.) Meet has more functionality than Hangouts, and is available in a tiered pricing system with varying degrees of functionality. ![]() Google Meet is an enterprise-level video conferencing tool included in Google’s G Suite. Plus, Google Chat is available as a standalone Chrome app, while Google Hangouts is not. With Google Chat, you can use to tag people or incorporate emoji reactions to messages, both of which are absent from Google Hangouts. Google Chat is billed as a business messaging app, unlike Hangouts. Google Chat, which will soon replace Google Hangouts, is an upgraded version of Google Hangouts with more features. It may be good for a quick one-on-one call or casual check-in with a group of up to 10 people, but there are no screen sharing or other video conferencing features, and the call format and layout are very limited. Similar to Apple’s FaceTime, Hangouts is meant for individuals, not organizations, so its functionality is limited. Google Hangouts is free communication software from Google that allows for messaging, phone calls, and video calls. It is very picky with selecting parts that mesh with it and that is where the designer takes over for quality needs. It is always hit and miss and not consistent in quality. I am not a fan of the new AKM4xxx series. It gets an epic pass for the inclusion of an actually functional EQ system that, well, actually works and sounds audibly different when toggled. True, the UI is a bit clunky, but it’s very basic still and that is okay by me. Ignore at the moment how good it sounds, just focus on the fact you even have one in the first place. The fact that a $299 DAC/AMP allows for digital control over some shelf-EQ, is a blessing in its own right. In terms of matchability, this product is nearly perfect. The UI window will show every single step of volume with the twist of the knob and will shut down the UI window view via twisting the volume knob far to the left, the reverse to turn the unit on. It includes a dynamic EQ system, fraught with plenty of customization options. This product is loaded with a fantastic internal UI, although, it is confusing at first and requires some usage to nail the layout after playing with it a bit. The underside of the product showcases a charging port and a USB connection for DAC usage. Directly next to them, lays the hefty volume knob that I enjoy playing with often due to high and satisfying tactility factor.ĭown the left side of the device, you get a Menu button, manual scrolling up and down buttons for cycling through the UI, and lastly, a select/Enter button. This Amp/DAC sports a simple 3.5mm output for headphones, as well as a 3.5mm optical/line input on the top of the device. ![]() It oozes supreme quality from top to bottom. There is no question that this Monolith portable amp & DAC is a monster in terms of build. Maybe, a simple firmware can stop volume hikes? Just a thought for the future. I am a bit scared to keep this in my pocket though because the step attenuation is extremely sensitive and you can go from -20 to +10 very fast and suddenly if you brush up against the volume knob. ![]() The volume knob is the star of the show, with a twisted metal vibe and a thick, weighted feel to the experience. The buttons are solid and have no wiggle, they exude excellent cosmetic flare and also a dense feel. However, the front side is very prone to fingerprints and damage in that regard, so, I am not sure what to make of it. I am not sure I like the combination, but I see why the rear has that material: due to laying on surfaces most of its life, sustaining damage or scratches will be unlikely with a covered material on the rear. The front panel looks like brushed metal, the rear side houses an imitation leather material. Solid aluminum framing with an LCD window, monochrome, but still, very vibrant and lovely. No and’s, if’s or but’s.ĭear cosmic deities! The build on this is absurdly great. I really dislike the idea of not being able to immediately use the product when consumers purchase it. I am sad to see that it does not and that I have to fish out some other brands interconnects for this review. If this product uses both 3.5mm and optical input, then it should come with at least a very short interconnect for both. No interconnects are included, which bothers considering the $299 price point. The Monolith box is fairly basic, just thick cardboard with an adapter and USB cable for charging. Big thanks to Marcus, again, for making this review possible. ![]() For my third installment of Monoprice goodness, in recent weeks, I’ll be taking a gander at the Monoprice Monolith Portable THX AAA DAC and Amp!
